Buchenwald
Buchenwald was a very unique ghetto. It was built by the prisoners themselves. During their free time Hitler's officers forced the prisoners to carry blocks of stone to the prison grounds Later, dozen of prisoners were chained to huge four-wheel carts and had to pull enormous loads to the camp while forced to sing by the SS. The SS used to call those prisoners the "Singing Horses". this particular camps way of torture was to kill the prisoners off with undurable, incapacitating work.
The ghettos original name was Ettersberg. The name was officially changed to Buchenwald on August 6, 1937. There were many ways to exterminate prisoners by work in Buchenwald. Thousands of prisoners died during the construction of the road leading from the foot of the Buchenwald to the entry of the camp. This road was called "Blood Street " by the prisoners. Due to overcrowding in the last few years of the camps activity some of the more brave prisoners formed an underground organization to hide numerous prisoners who were to be executed.
