Born Benjamin Lewertow( later changed to Bronisław Geremek) in Warsaw, Poland on March, 6, 1932, Benjamin and his mother were smuggled out of a camp by Stefan Geremek ( whom his mother later married) from then on in his life Benjamin was raised as a Roman Catholic although he doesn't consider himself either a Jew or Roman catholic. He got his History PhD in 1960 and in 1972 he was granted a (PAN) or postdoctoral degree at the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1989 he was appointed associate professor. History of culture and medieval society was Geremek's main domain of scholarly work. His scholarly achievements included numerous articles and lectures, and has wrote about ten books.
Most of his career was with the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he worked from 1955 to 1985. In 1992 he was designated visiting professor at the Collège de France. Some of his achievments would be that he was given several honorary degrees by the University of Bologna, Utrecht University, the Sorbonne, Columbia University, and Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He was also a member of countless organization some of which are Academia Europea, the PEN Club, the Société Européenne de Culture, fellow of Collegium Invisibile[3] and numerous other societies and associations.
He was a longtime professor and Chairholder of the Chair of European Civilisation at the College of Europe until his death in July 13, 2008.
